Our community

Cromarty secretly lies at the furthest point on the Black isle. Once used as a shipping port, naval base and fishing town it is enriched in history. Changed days it is now used as a centre for oil rig maintenance / construction and a main tourist site for the Highlands.

    Cromarty Arts Trust

The Cromarty Arts Trust was formed initially to restore some very fine 18th Century buildings in the village of Cromarty: the Old Brewery, the Stables and the Salmon Bothy at Eathie.

One of these buildings, The Stables, a Grade A listed building was restored and refurbished in 1995 to provide 7 artists studios on the ground floor and a gallery space and residential flat above. Since then, the Trust has been very busy offering artists in residence placements from internationally diverse artists, showcasing local artists and creating opportunities for community involvement. We implement these aims and objectives by creating a year long programme of arts and cultural events including community events, concerts featuring classical and chamber music, traditional music and jazz. We also run series of classes with Gaelic as the main theme and we create a diverse programme of exhibitions and opportunities for makers of crafts to display and sell their work.

    The Old Brewery

Small-scale home brewing was popular in Cromarty during the 17th century, when much of the grain grown on local farms would be malted for ale. However when the export trade to Edinburgh and overseas proved more valuable for the grain a decline in this small scale operations occurred, but even in 1744 there were no fewer than 25 brewers operating in Cromarty.

    Sutor Creek

Sutor Creek Café in Cromarty, run by husband and wife team Graham and Phoebe Fox, is a relaxed family restaurant offering innovatively cooked seasonal food and traditional Italian wood-fired pizzas.

Lunch and dinner menus are created from locally sourced, seasonal produce that highlight the very best of what the Black Isle’s natural larder has to offer. Cromarty langoustines, crabs and lobsters are landed at the harbour just yards from the kitchen door, the rich farming heritage on the Black Isle provides exceptional meats and vegetables, while edible flowers, foraged mushrooms and herbs are incorporated into dishes as they are in season.

Sutor Creek’s traditional Italian wood-fired pizzas are made from home-made dough, topped with a simple tomato and garlic sauce, mozzarella cheese and then baked to perfection on the brick hearth of the traditional wood-fired oven. Toppings range from pepperoni to roast vegetables with pesto and toasted hazelnuts, and the ever-famous crayfish, Italian sausage, ricotta and coriander!

Open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am-9pm, Sutor Creek offers a selection of home-baking, teas & coffees, organic wines and local beers, lunch, dinner and wood-fired pizzas.
